Developers know that building for many platforms can be a challenge. That challenge is multiplied in the augmented reality universe because of the variety of header and mobile-based platforms that can be targeted. From virtual reality to augmented reality, there are the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR, Microsoft Hololens, Apple ARKit, Android ARCore and then the bevvy of web-based virtual reality and augmented reality viewers.
Because the market does not yet have a clear leader, developing for many platforms has to be a part of any augmented reality app developer’s plan. Doing so can easily double or triple the time and cost associated with a build. Enter Mirra, a cross-platform development SDK made to target all existing platforms. While they only support Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and desktop platforms now, support is planned for all major platforms.
Mirra is designed to help everyone create immersive experience using a set of common building blocks that will work across platforms. This means that business people creating pitches could use it as well as a developer could. The Mirra creator interface is drag and drop so what you see is what you get. This type of accessibility will go a long way to increasing adoption across the board.
Another very cool element of Mirra is the built in shareability. Being able to invite people into your experience across platforms and social networks easily is a going to be very helpful. As of now we’re stuck in a “download the app, sorry if you don’t have the right platform” phase. While there are only 2 immersive experiences available now, I can see the gallery populating quickly given the ease of use factor.
