VIVE’s Amy Peck on VR in Enterprise

Share

VIVE’s most recent GDC replacement webinar was live this Tuesday, May 5. The webinar featured Senior Director of Enterprise Content, Amy Peck.

Peck’s presentation “What’s the Opportunity for VR in Enterprise?” included a number of use-cases in industry that use XR products and services in their workflows. The presentation also included tools and resources that developers working with VIVE can access.

Perhaps the most engaging notion in the presentation was Peck’s advice to companies on how to reach internal economies of scale for VR solutions.

Cost as a Barrier to Entry

Readers know that XR technologies have huge potential for solutions. Enterprise companies using XR technologies are already aware of this. However, adoption of these technologies, while promising, remains low relative to its potential.

One of the major reasons for this is cost, or perceived cost, of incorporating these technologies.

Peck commented that recent spending, particularly in research and development, has increased but not exponentially in recent years. Most of those projects are training. However, using XR technologies in some use cases and not others are what drive up the cost per solution.

Building Economies of Scale by Reusing Assets

Peck pointed out that VR solutions used by companies to solve different problems can often be built using the same assets. 3D designs used to design a product can also be used for training, marketing, and sales.

We’re starting to see more and more tools and plugins and workflows and optimization tools that allow us to move these 3D assets, experiences, and environments from one [platform] to another so again, building this economy of scale,” said Peck. “…It’s thinking in a holistic way about leveraging this data and how it can be leveraged for different use-cases.”

The only set back is that if assets themselves are made in different platforms or with different engines, this transfer can be clunky without Digital Asset Management Systems. While this may seem like an additional barrier, it allows businesses to reuse those assets making each addition XR use-case less expensive to implement.

This system has to enable reuse of these digital assets, and this gets you to that economy of scale,” said Peck.

VIVE Sync in Open Beta

One of the other exciting moments from Peck’s talk was the announcement that VIVE’s collaboration platform “Sync” is now in open beta. The platform was first announced by VP of Content Product, David Sapienza, during his talk in the same series three weeks ago.

The platform was then in a closed beta, but is now available to the public.

Hoping to See You at Next GDC

There was a lot more in Peck’s talk, mainly showcasing how major companies use XR products and services in their workflows.

Pec’s talk was the last talk in this series. ARPost has enjoyed sharing, commenting on, and contextualizing these talks for the last six weeks but we look forward to seeing VIVE live and in-person at GDC next year.
