Launched in the fall of 2020, ONX Studio is a production studio and exhibition gallery catering to creative professionals working with extended reality mediums. From June 9 to 20, the studio will launch an inaugural virtual reality showcase as a collaborator of the Tribeca Festival. It will take place at its hybrid space in Onassis Gallery of Olympic Tower.
ONX Studio is a hybrid workspace and studio, which is home to dozens of creative minds. It caters to a new wave of artists who want to explore new mediums of storytelling, such as augmented reality, virtual reality, projection mapping, and motion capture.
Featuring 4,000 square feet of space, ONX Studio serves as a venue for artists to create and test their work. They can also produce demos for curators, collectors, and agencies.
Many ONX Studio artists will showcase their work at the upcoming inaugural event. New immersive projects and installations will be on display every day. For instance, there will be a virtual reality talk show, live motion-capture filming, spatial audio experiences, and more.
The event covers a broad range of extended reality experiences, some of which were previously displayed at festivals like Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW.
At the inaugural exhibition, artists will feature new immersive works. They’ll also delve into the creative processes behind their masterpieces.
The studio intends to hold month-long extended reality exhibits every year. These events will be featuring works from the studio’s own members. Moreover, ONX aims to host open houses and salons where artists can meet and exchange ideas. They can also build a network of creatives who are part of the emerging immersive art scene.
One of the highlights of the showcase is IF NOT NOW. It’s live motion capture, featuring the transformation of a Flex dancer into an Afro-Futurist robot. Creators Kordae Henry and Jeremy Hartley will direct the live performance and filming on June 9. Guests will be able to see the VR experience from June 10 to 12.
Another immersive experience that’s also worth the wait is Metamorphic. ONX artists Matthew Niederhauser and John Fitzgerald are collaborating with other artists to create this social virtual reality experience.
Metamorphic uses the human body as a medium for expression to explore the ephemeral existence of humanity through a series of hand-drawn worlds. Only a limited number of guests can see this VR experience during each time slot. Thus, guests will have to come early from June 13 to 16 to witness this piece.
In addition, ONX Studio will feature an interesting exhibit from Theo Triantafyllidis called Anti-Gone. It’s a theater-inspired Twitch stream, where protagonists are avatars wearing VR headsets. It will go on display from June 17 to 20.
Three of ONX Studio projects are official selections at Tribeca Immersive. These are Kinfolk, CURRENT, and Polæ.
Tickets for the inaugural ONX Studio Showcase cost $20. The virtual reality showcase is open from 12 pm to 8 pm, starting on June 9 until June 20.
