Augmented Reality Technology Makes Its Way to MAC Cosmetics

Powered by ModiFace, the try-on mirror uses augmented reality technology that allows facial tracking and 3D video makeup.

The launch of an augmented reality technology try-on mirror was announced by MAC on November 14, 2017. Powered by ModiFace and using the latest technology that allows facial tracking and 3D video makeup, the mirror allows users to try on various MAC shades and looks. It provides the makeup video under all lighting conditions with realistic accuracy and rendering.

MAC’s Tim Tareco, the Store design, SVP Global Creative and Visual Merchandising said that the brand was thrilled to offer its users the try-on mirror. He added that the new ModiFace-powered mirror offers a new realism level so as to bring life to the unique sense of artistry offered by the brand.

A set of 29 custom eye looks are included in the Virtual MAC. Each has been individually designed to replicate faces to the highest degree to provide an ultra-real rendition. With a fraction of a pixel, the looks are mapped to each face at 30 times per second. The outcome is both precise and smooth and is almost impossible to tell apart from the genuine looks that are achieved by makeup artists.

The augmented reality technology try-on mirror has been rolled out in the US MAC stores and it is expected that the global roll out will begin in early 2018.

MAC Cosmetics is renowned for its unique variety of shades. According to Jennifer Tidy, Vice President of Partnerships, ModiFace is delighted to partner with MAC cosmetics on augmented reality technology initiatives that will provide users with great experiences.

In stores, ModiFace’s try-on mirrors increase sales by 31% because customers are more confident they’ll love what they’re buying. Installing these mirrors is beneficial, as they can really determine their customers’ buying habits. Whether it is the customer’s go to brand or preferred colors, MAC can easily see what shoppers want, particularly in different demographics.
